WELCOME TO BURNSALL VA PRIMARY SCHOOL

Some of the events that make Burnsall so special...

Hap-Bee Day March 2011

To support Fairtrade Fortnight Burnsall held its first ever Hap-Bee day! Children and staff wanted to create a buzz about Fairtrade. Children in KS2 have been learning all about Fairtrade and the benefits of supporting such a worthy cause. School was buzzing all day, as our very own swarm of bees were buzzzzy hard! A visit by Wharfdale Bee Keepers Association in the afternoon enabled us all to learn a little bit more about bees and the important jobs they do!

Many thanks to all invovled for supporting Fairtrade.

Children in Need 2010

Burnsall children showed off their spots in the aim of raising lots! Children and staff turned up for a day of learning covered head to toe in spots. Throughout the day a number of activities took place in an attempt to raise that little bit more for such a worthy cause. Burnsall's Drama Group arranged a talent show where the children could perform an act of their choice. Throughout the day children and staff were invited to dig deep for any 1p and 2p coins in order to create a trail around the hall. A wonderful amount was raised for a charity close to our hearts. Thanks to all involved.

Open Day

A week in November saw the children of Burnsall involved in activities of an eco nature that were designed to broaden their understanding of what ‘we’ have to do to help the planet and why. School had a visit from Power-down Pete, North Yorkshire ’s Carbon Reduction Superhero to help us further develop this knowledge. School hosted a ‘Green Open Day’ for parents and friends in the community. Thanks to all those who attended.

Circus Day

Burnsall transformed into a Circus in the summer of 2010. Children and staff spent the day clowning around learning an array of circus tricks. 'Shooting Stars' (a company specialising in circus skills) visited school and taught a range skills that we practise and performed during the day. Some of us were more successful than others at the diabolo and juggling, however we all had great fun!

'Around the World' Open Day

Burnsall opened its doors at the end of May to host an 'Around the World' open day.  We had an array of exciting activities that took place throughout the day.  Visitors came into school during the day to enjoy the activities with the children and staff. Each class had a range of activities refecting the traditions of a particular country. Class 1 looked at India, Class 2 were looking at North America and Class 3 looked at China.  The hall hosted an African drumming workshop, the children, staff and vsitors had the opportunity to rehearse a traditional piece of music and in turn perform it!  A wonderful day and a huge thank you to all those who came along to support the event.

Seatbelt Safety

The Seatbelt Sheriff arrived at Burnsall at the beginning of May to teach the children and staff all about road safety and the importance of wearing seatbelts. The Seatbelt Sheriff provided a fun way of getting children involved in saving lives on the road.
The whole school become Seatbelt Sheriffs, taking a pledge to wear our safety belts and  to make sure that everyone else in the car is buckled up too.

Fashion Show Fun

Burnsall transformed its hall into a catwalk on Monday 21st March for an evening of fun! Parents and friends were invited along to our Fashion Show Fundraiser. Kath and her team from Complete Clothing came along and put on a brilliant show.  20 children from across school, and a group of ladies very kindly offered to be models for the evening, showing off the fabulous selection of clothes that were brought. The whole evening went without a hitch and all the models should be very proud of their efforts! A huge thank you to Kath for putting on a brilliant show, but also to all those who supported the event - its success was down to you! Thank you!

World Book Day

(...and WOW, what a day!!)

To celebrate 'World Book Day' Bursnall opened its gates to a whole host of book characters! All the children and staff arrived dressed a character from a book.

A parade took place first thing in the school hall where the children got to show off their efforts and they even had their costumes judged by a group of Oompa-Loompas!!

An event thoroughly enjoyed by all!

A big thank you goes out to all the children (and parents) for their efforts!

Christmas Star Attraction

Burnsall held a whole school Christmas production in December 2009. The children did an incredible job and worked hard to put on two performances of 'The Star Attraction'.

A great way to get us all in the Christmas spirit!!

Children in Need

November 2009 saw everyone arrive at school covered head to toe in spots and stripes – some even topped off their look with a crazy hairstyle!

There were organised activities throughout the day that allowed the children to really see the need for supporting this charity. Class 3 spent the morning learning about children less fortunate than themselves; they were able to witness how their support directly benefitted young people all over the UK. The day taught the children of Burnsall to enjoy life and all it brings, but not to take for granted that this is the life that all children lead!

It was a great success and spirits were high (especially after the bun sale during afternoon play!) We raised just over £100.

Wedding Bells

Wedding bells were ringing at St Wilfrids chruch in October 2009. Guests including pupils, parents and staff were invited to dress up and attend the wedding ceremony of two KS1 children. The ceremony in church was led by local vicar Rev. Fiona Jenkins, hymns selected by the children were sung and everyone involved had a really special day.

Children and staff were invited back to school for a sit down reception and to toast the happy couple!

GRANDPARENTS LUNCH

The children had the opportunity to invite grandparents into school to join them for their lunch. The children spent the hour sitting and talking with their grandparents, while enjoying a special meal that was prepared by Mrs Barnes.

A great chance for grandparents to see their grandchildren at school!

HAREWOOD

After a long year of very hard work the children and staff from Burnsall had a well deserved whole school trip to Harewood House. The children enjoyed looking around the grounds of the house and around the bird gardens. After lunch and a quick play on the adventure playground we took a look inside the house itself, imagining what it would have been like to live in such a home! A brilliant day had by all and a great way to bring the year at Burnsall to an end!

A big thankyou to the 'friends' of the school who very kindly funded the trip!

'LIFT OFF' AT CRAVEN COLLEGE

Following their space mission to the International Space Station, Astronaut Mission Commander Lee Archambault and his crew of space shuttle STS-119 visited Craven College on Tuesday 7 July 2009. Children from KS2 were invited to the college to meet the astronauts. The children were able to watch video footage from the mission that was filmed by the men themselves! A fantastic opportunity, one that everyone enjoyed!

GRASSINGTON FESTIVAL

Children and staff set off on their annual walk to Grassington Festival on a sunny day in June 2009, all carrying with them their smiles and packed lunches! The whole school set off on foot along the river, taking in the beautiful surroundings before arriving at the Town Hall where the children split into Key Stages and watched theatrical performances of 'The Mozart Question' (KS2) and 'The Little Mermaid' (KS1).

 JRFH

May 2009 saw the whole school take part in a sponsored JUMP OFF in order to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. Children, staff and parents spent the afternoon in the playground taking part in a range of skipping activities! Despite the weather the afternoon was a great success and the efforts of the children raised a staggering £1037!

Easter Events

The last day of term was fun filled and action packed!

We started the day by hosting an Easter Bonnet Parade. The children brought in the bonnets that they had designed and made at home and paraded around the school hall in front of all children and staff. A winner from each year group was selected by local vicar Fiona Jenkins.

Shortly after the children and staff took part in the tradition of egg rolling. The children decorated their eggs in class and took it in turns to roll their egg down the playground in the hope of winning!

Finally, the afternoon involved the children taking part in a fantastic Easter service in church. The children walked into church wearing their bonnets for all those who attended to see! The service included children in Class 1 singing a song, the children in Class 2 reading a traditional Easter story and the children in Class 3 reading aloud poems they had written in school.

A well supported event, thanks to all involved!

A Day To Remember

In October 2008 the children at Burnsall welcomed home a local hero!

Andy Hodge, the 2008 Olympic Coxless 4 gold medalist, returned to his former school to meet and share his experiences with pupils and staff!

Many children being lucky enough to hold the genuine gold medal that Andy won in Beijing!

The children took part in a question and answer session with Andy just before learning a few of his rowing techniques!

Andy inspired the children of Burnsall to work hard in order to achieve their dreams!
