WELCOME TO BURNSALL VA PRIMARY SCHOOL

 This term our topic is.......

PLANET OCEAN

The topic was launched on our first day back at school. After stepping foot through the school gates the children were faced with their first challenge of the school year - before they were allowed in their classrooms the children had to work in teams to create rafts that could be sailed!

As you can see every child pulled out all the stops and worked as part of a team to successfully create a raft!

KS2 children have been learning all about people linked with the sea. The children have spent time researching Christopher Columbus and learning all about the voyages he went on and the discoveries he made. Year 5 and 6 looked at how portraits of Christopher Columbus vary so much due to the fact that many drawings are based on peoples personal perceptions, we decided to put our portrait skills to the test and have a go at our own!

We have been learning all about Grace Darling and her links with the RNLI, the children have been working hard to construct fully functioning lighthouses...what do you think?

The aim of our investigation was to see if the lighthouses could stand freely in gale force winds - well done to all those groups who managed to design a lighthouse that could withstand such hideous weather conditions!

The children spent time researching and learning all about the RNLI. The children in KS2 studied the history behind the organization and the work it has done over the years to make our seas and oceans safer.

The whole school went along to the Cool Seas Road show at Netherside Hall.  The children, with their 5c’s clearly on display, listened to a talk by the Marine Conservation Society about creatures in the ocean.  Life size models of dolphins, whale’s and sharks were on display and they were amazing.  Part of the talk was for us to consider how we can look after out oceans and how one of the biggest killers of sea creatures is plastic bottles that get washed away by the sea.  The Marine Conservation Society have challenged us to a recycling competition.  They would like us to recycle our plastic bottles and every time we do they ask us to prove it by saving the bottle top and sending it in to school. In exchange for the bottle tops they will send us a new football kit made from recycled plastic – as worn by the Brazilian football team.  So start recycling now!

KS2 spent some of their time studying the Titanic. The children were engrossed with the history of the ship and hype that the ocean liner created. The children compared famous liners from history to liners that are around today. Children in KS2 studied how one persons dream became a reality – but at a cost! The children used their research skills to look on the internet to find passenger lists of all those individuals who boarded the Titanic in 1912. The children were able to research their lives and discover a little about why they were onboard.

The children spent time investigating how life on board would differ for people in first class compared to those in third class. The children explored how the rooms differed and how social status impacted on the evacuation procedures.
